baltimore city cabinetmaker in search of wood technologist for question and answering
hello fellow knotheads —
im a baltimore city-based cabinetmaker who is trying to gain a better understanding of the many features and characteristics in the roughsawn boards i purchase for projects. i am uneductaed in this area of the trade, with some questions a wood technologist could certainly answer. im looking to learn more about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ certain wood is the way it is, in order to anticipate problems and better plan my steps during a project.
i work mainly with walnut, oak, cherry and mohogany.
thanks
emn

I don't know any wood experts in your area. I would reccomend a couple of books: The Wood Handbook written by the Agriculture Department and Bruce Hoadley's Understanding Wood. Taking a course on lumber grading from the National Hardware Lumber Association or a nearby college with a forestry department would increase your knowledge immensely.
Technologist
This is an upcoming course in Connecticut. If you are willing to travel - never took one of their classes - good luck
