Any ideas for a shop made jig for installing iron balusters ? I will need to drill into the handrail as well as the top of the wall which is the same rake as the rail?
Thanks

One typical method is to layout the balluster positions on the rake wall, then lay the rail on that wall and transfer the marks. The rail is then turned upside down on the wall for drilling. Spade type bits are useful with the long point. These allow you to start the hole on an angle. If the rail is in place, just use a level and plumb up to the rail, which will require drilling up side down. If you want a special tool, L.J. Smith carries a number of installation tools. There are also boring units but they are a bit expensive for somebody that doesn't do it everyday.

Thanks, hadn't thought of the transfer method.
The L.J. Smith tool just looks pricey
