I would like to design a series of office furniture using baltic birch panels for work surfaces. The 5’x5′ size seems common, but I need access to sizes up to 3’x7′. All this is approximately 1″ thickness. Can anyone advise me of a source for this material? Texas would be best, but I’ll take whatever. Any experience cutting, milling edges (waterfall eases etc.), making grid style bookcases, and finishing would be appreciated too.
Thanks – JP

The only sheet size of true baltic birch plywood I have ever seen is 5' x 5'. We use tons of it in our furniture design program. When a student needs similar looking wood of longer lengths, we resort to other hardwood plywood that come in 4' x 8' sheets. You can get american birch veneered lumber-core plywood most places. I've also occasionally seen apple plywood, and some others with more consistant inner plys that I can't think of the name for right now.
If you absolutely have to get a strip longer than 5', see if it can be cut diagonally out of the 5'x5' sheet. Expect considerable waste, though.

Last week on Woodworks David Marks said apple ply had nothing to do with apple wood and was marketed as such in order for an American product to compete with baltic birch. "Apple ply" sounds like "apple pie" and what is more American than that? I'd never heard of it before. Of course, he is on the left coast. But honey, I can make money if I had just one more tool. Really.
I've bought 4 X 8 sheets of baltic birch before from my local plywood distributor, however they're in Canada. Check with the local cabinet shops to see where they get their plywood, as there's a good chance that their supplier will be able to get you larger sheets. However, I've noticed the quality of baltic birch has gone downhill, and now isn't nearly as flat as it used to be. You might want to consider something else if you won't be veneering over it.
Anderson International Trading (or is it Anderson Trading?) in Anaheim, Calif. I believe thay shipp and the also carry a HUGE stock oc tubes and curved components. They also carry 3ply that is less than 1/32", about the thickness of a standard business card(It ain't cheap)
