I am starting a job making cheater treads (for carpet runner) on a curved staircase out of bamboo. I have 4’ x 8’ sheets of this stuff (kinda neat). It’s made of 1/8” x 3/4” pieces on the face with a core of 1/8” x ½” pieces going the other way.
My question is has anybody worked with bamboo?
Does it glue ok?

I haven't worked with it, but I do have a project I've been thinking about that I was hoping to use it so I will be following this discussion closely. (Thinking about a dining room table with top of bamboo with about a 2" walnut edge. I want to do Nakashima conoid chair style legs on the table and maybe some conoid chairs to go with it.) I'd also like to get a bamboo floor installed.

P.S. How much was your 4x8 sheet and where did you get it? Finished or unfinished?

It’s $175 + shipping for a 4’x 8’ sheet, from a company in San Francisco called Plyboo (bad name). I didn’t supply the materials for this job so I don’t have an address. It’s unfinished.

Thanks Jeff, I think they're on my list of Bamboo links. (I've been contemplating the flooring, so I've bookmarked a good number of pages.) Is that Smith & Fong? I think their site address has "plyboo" in it. But there is also a company by the name of plyboo. Might be that Smith & Fong sell plyboo brand products, but I know they are San Francisco based.

There's a lumber yard in the Bay Area named Earthsource (http://www.earthsourcewood.com/) that carries bamboo sheet goods. They also have sheet goods made from sunflower seed hulls, from wheat stalks, and from soy plants. Interesting stuff.
I asked this question sometime before the board's format switch, and I think Scott Braun answered. I myself ended up not doing the project I was asking about, but he said he'd had good luck gluing, sanding and finishing it. If you run a web search for his site you'll find some photos of a bamboo kitchen piece there-- at least, it was up when I asked about the stuff. He seemed to like it.

I found Scott’s web site and got his phone number. So I called him and got the skinny on working with bamboo. He said it’s just like wood. Titebond glue works fine. Expansion is the same as wood.
Thank you John you helped allot.

A fellow named Jim Kaslik installed bamboo floors in his monolithic concrete dome home. He posts in Breaktime as "Cloud Hidden" and i know the bamboo flooring part was discussed extensively. One could attempt a search or just contact Jim through BT or his site.

After doing tests with different glues the only one that worked was epoxy. So I’m using the West System.
