If the saw has a small dust port at the blade, you don't get much air flow. Volume of air movement always makes a difference in collection effectiveness. One of the easiest revampings on bandsaws is to cut a 4" port in the lower door.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I have a Delta 14 inch with one of those small dust ports. Do you know if there is any retro fit bigger port available?
If I decide to cut a port into the lower door, where on the door should it be cut? Center? On the front edge below the table? I believe I saw one in a bandsaw book that was cut at the blade exit point near the top edge.
Anyone have thoughts on this?
Delta has an adapter. I have one and it works very well, the downside is it makes blade changes a PIA.
Here's a link with a picture.

If you dig around you should find another thread where I show pictures of the dust collector adapter I made to go under the bottom wheel of my ancient Delta (I wasn't willing to poke a hole thru the cover). Mine has an opening between the cover and the 'other side' of the frame, the newer ones don't have that.
Some of the older Delta saws have a flat door. These are great for cutting into, you can remove the door at the hinge bolts. A 4" hole saw in a drill press will work. If you have a flat door, I'd put the hole in the bottom door, about 1/3 of the way up on the table side. Low enough so it doesn't interfere with table and guide adjustments or operator position. I've seen some at the bottom center. This site has a plastic flange elbow and also a 4" universal port. I cut down a metal splice, snipped the end so once inserted into the hole, tabs were bent and riveted.

I think you will find this article of much help.

1. Don't do any sawing.
2. If you do, use a dust collection system.
Sorry for the smart alec response woodenhead, but it might help if you mentioned just a little something about your machine and what efforts you have made to control dust.
Are you having problems getting a DC system to work properly? Have you fitted the machine with any kind of dust control? Are you just letting the dust settle where it may?

Please don't try to insult someone and in a backhand way say your sorry, in the future you can ignore my post.
Lighten up, woodenhead. There's a huge difference between a little kidding and an insult. There was no insult directed in my response. You posted absolutely no information about your "problem" leaving anyone who responded to guess at what you need, which in terms of your bandsaw situation is apparently still a mystery. With that thin skin you had better be careful handling any kind of rough stock.Best of luck.Rich
> With that thin skin you had better be careful handling any kind of rough stock.Ok, so your first one wasn't an insult and this isn't either? Sure the initial post was missing key information, but it clearly could be handled in a civil fashion.Pete
Got a dust port? If so a shop vac with a HEPA filter will work wonders for most cuts. You need the HEPA or else the vac blows the fines around worse than the saw alone.

Hi, This tip may not work on your saw, but a friend of mine added a thin piece of weatherstripping around the upper and lower doors of his machine. It is a Eurostyle 20". He said it really improved the dust collection pick-up from the bandsaw.
take care,
John
Woodhead,
I drilled a hole near the bottom of the bottom door and attached a fitting for a 2 1/2" hose. Using a wye fitting, I was able to have a hose run to the fitting in the door and the original dust port, and connect them to a 4" hose. This set up has been very effective in controlling the dust, even with my bargain basement Delta dust collector ( Lowes on close-out for about $80). I also installed a switch/receptacle on the base of the saw so I can easily control the dust collector. (See attached photo)

I like Rob Millards set-up, woodenhead. He has the main port up front under the table with a Y connector to a bottom central location. If you have ever given attention to where dust accumulates, notice bottom rear corner coming off the wheel before the blade starts back up to the top wheel.
Even with a trap built in just underneath the table, a brush strategically placed there and a main dust port there (Ala Mini Max), you won't get it all, especially re-sawing. There will always be some in the bottom rear corner which leads me to believe that some probably made it back up the wheel to the contaminate the top wheel.
I think that a 4" port bottom center or bottom rear (preferably if enough room is allowed as larger BS's) along with another added stiff brush to try to catch what did make it through would be a positive move. But... I would up-size that bottom port to 4" and move it opposite the door side to the frame side as to not have to dis-connect the hose when I open that bottom door..
And even then, I don't think that all will be accounted for as there is a tremendous amount of saw-dust created, especially on re-saw of thick stock. Just my opinion formed from my own observation over the years at my shop.
Regards...
SARGE..
