My 20 inch bandsaw is misbehaving lately.
The blade is deflecting forward and backwards.
Please tell me what you think is the problem and what I can do to correct it.
Thank you.

It is my opinion that your blade is "oscillating" because it is out of level (has been bent or twisted or otherwise deformed) or it has uneven tension. Probrably you need a new blade.
Hi lungfish,
You are right. The blade is deformed.I have fitted a new blade to my bandsaw and it is singing again. Thank you for your help.

Woodslicer,
When you say the blade is moving "forwards and backwards" do you mean that it is alternately touching the thrust bearing and then moving away from it?
If this is a sudden change, on a blade that has been used for awhile, the most likely cause is a stress crack that is causing a kink in the blade. Rotate the blade by hand and watch as it goes through the guides, it should be easy to spot the kinked part of the blade. If it is a stress crack, the blade is probably only a few dozen revolutions away from snapping. If this is a new blade, and the fault is at the weld, the supplier should replace it.
If the problem isn't with the blade, and it occurs with any blade that you install on the saw, then the problem most likely is in the tires or the wheel bearings. The first thing to look for on the wheels is to make sure there isn't a build up of sawdust and resin on the tire's surface causing an uneven surface for the blade to run on.
I'd be interested to know what you discover.
John W.
Hi JohnW,
Your description of my problem is correct.I have spotted a knick on the blade.
I have fitted a new blade to my bandsaw and it is now singing again.
Thank you for your generous advice.

Thanks, JohnW. That is the most helpful thing I have seen on this board for some time.
I noticed the same problem a few weeks ago. I almost asked about in on this forum, but I didn't. A few days later, the blade snapped during a critical cut.
Now i know why.
Thanks again,
Dan
Blade is kinked, replace it.
