Hi to all,
I have a chance to pick up an 18″ steel cutting band saw. It is a very heavy duty machine and has alot of nice features. My question is this: will the steel cutting band saw have enough speed to cut wood effectively. It has a pulley drive system that allows one to vary the speed and can go up to 115 ipm (I am assuming this is the units for the speed number on the machine). I could probably re-gear it for more speed but I would have to check. 115 ipm sounds slow to me but I don’t know what is typical. Any help?

from what i learned here you'll have to bump it up 10 fold, try a search in the archives pulley ratio's. but i'm sure you'll get help here . enjoy the the BS
With 18" wheels and 3000 ft/min blade speed, you need about 2.7:1 reduction for 637 rpm drive wheel speed. With a 2.5" PD drive (motor) sheave on a 1725 rpm motor, use a 6.75" PD arbor sheave, for example.
Be seeing you...

You can research things yourself by checking catalog specs. Compare similar wheel sizes in wood and metal.
