I’m trying to hook a Delta 14″ bandsaw to a central dust collection system, but without much success. The saw is about 20 years old and doesn’t have any dust shoot. It does have big gaps on the blade guards that work like fountains to send the dust all over. Any recommendations for hook-ups?

My newer Delta has that crappy little 1 1/4" hookup that's useless for dust. I see two options that would work for you. The option I chose is to attach a rigid 4" PVC connector to the side of the base right below the table. I then use flex hose that's about 4" too long going from the connector up to the bottom of the table, right underneath the blade guard. The extra length of the hose puts a slight bend in it, and friction holds it in place under the table. I use this and it works fairly well. I epoxied the pvc connector to a piece of plywood, then used sheet metal screws to attach the plywood to the saw base. I hope this description makes sense.
Another option that is supposed to work even better is to cut a 4" hole into the front of the bottom blade guard cover, and install a flush fitting 4" hose connector there. Folks who have done this say it does a pretty good job of collecting most all the dust. That's where a lot of the dust winds up anyway, so I imagine this would work well.
Oh, another option may be to look at the Delta add-ons they sell. I think they make two different models of sheet metal dust hookups for the 14" saw. Both attach to the side of the saw under the table. At least one is a 5" connector though. For the life of me, I don't understand why Delta insists on building to non-standard fitting sizes.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
John
Ittura Design sells an attachment for the 14" Delta. You may want to contact them to see if the attachment works on a 20 year old saw.
I don't know about 20 year old 14" Delta bandsaws, but I ordered my 10 year old Delta with an add-on dust chute from Tool Crib of the North. Part number is Delta 50-239. It has a 5" connector, and works quite well.
Regards,
Bob
