Bandsaw motor dust advice exchange
I have advice to exchange: In all the bandsaw tuneup articles I’ve never seen this…When changing the blade or whenever you need to adjust the lower guides, take the table off. So much easier to see them and as long as you guide the table on or off toward the back of the blade you won’t damage it.
Here is the advice i need. I have the 14″ Delta and I’m thinking about adding the heigth thing and going to a 2 hp motor. Will the cast frame handle this much power and stress?
Next. The dust collection port misses too much dust. Has anyone added a port to the lower door or the bottom and how did it work out?
Thanks ArcWood

I did the 2hp motor. 10 or 11 years ago and changed out to a pair of 4 step pullies for speed changes. So far no problems. Same band saw.
The dust collector I added to the lower right hand edge of the door in 4"
Also did the riser block. Don't regret that either.
I do 90% resaw. Like the idea of table removale.
The current Delta catalog shows 14" bandsaws with 2 hp motors. Item 28-241 is listed as a 1.5 hp saw, but 28-241F and 28-241G are 2 hp, single- and three-phase versions, respectively. I wouldn't loose too much sleep over the upgrade, assuming yours is the same basic saw.
Be seeing you...
Asked a similar questions of the Delta guys on Wood Net. One responded that even if he never had problems with the 5 hp motor on his bandsaw he could not give advice about changing the motor on a machine. Wouldn't be prudent! 8^). A CYA way of saying it's fine to do. The 3/4 hp that was stock just doesn't get it does it?

Thanks. Now its just a matter of money. When I go from the 1725 rpm to the 3450 I'll change pulleys. I suppose I should speed it up a bit.
ArcWood.
Higher speeds have a tendicy to throw the blade. The blades get kinked. The saw gets damaged. The tires get ripped up.
Pulleying a higher speed motor to and acceptable FPS speed increases the torque. If the blade is dull it will still cut but the wheels and bearings won't accept the now higher level of stress.
I've converted my Rockwell 14" to a 2HP Delta motor I bought off E-bay. Runs great. Had to put a 10" pulley on the saw and a 4" on the motor, to slow it down far enough.
They still have the motors on e-bay for aroun $100 + freight.
For more than you want to know about bandsaws, including running at higher fpm, check in with Louie Ittura. He's got a great catalog, full of all kinds of bandsaw info, better than many books for which you have to pay $.
(He's a strong advocate of more horsepower and higher blade speed.)
Thanks you'all. I'm excited.
