I have a Delta 14 in bandsaw that is about 8 years old (week end hobbyist shop). Recently when I try to start it the motor hums, but the wheels don’t turn. At times I’d start a wheel by hand and then it would go to speed. Now it doesn’t run at all , just hums. Is this a starting capacitor problem? I looked the saw over and nothing seems to be rubbing.
Thanks

Could be. If there's a centrifugal switch in it, it may be that the switch is jammed with sawdust. Seems obvious, but make sure the wheels turn freely by hand too.

Pete,
The power switch is on the frame. Is the centrifigual switch in the motor casing?
Thanks
Frank
Are there openings in the motor frame on the opposite end from the pulley? If so, give it a big blast of compressed air.

I'm not familiar with your saw motor but in general if you look thru the cooling vents in the end of the motor you may see a set of contacts. These make up the centifugal switch which do have a tendancy to clog up on some machines. I have a motor on one of my jointers which misbehaves occassionally (same symptoms as yours). To fix it the first time I pulled the end caps off & cleaned around & in the contacts & put it back. It ran well (as it should after the attention it got) but some time later the problem reoccured during a period when I had less time so it got the Mike (planewood) treatment & has been good ever since. The treatment may not show too much finesse but it worked.............

yup.
Thanks all. I will give it a try.
