I recently got a few of those small barrel hinges to try out. These are the hinges that you commonly see on pen cases with the back of the lid and box body chamfered at 45 with the hinge set in bored holes. I’m hoping to use them on my smaller hinged lid boxes since they are much cheaper than a pair of barbed hinges.
I’m having trouble drilling the holes in just the right spot to get a nicely opening lid in which the back of the lid and back of the box meet face to face with no gap between them.
Does anyone who has used these hinges successfully have a sure fire way to install them?

Jeffrey, I have used barrel hinges a few times. Try brad point bits for boring the holes.Dowel centers placed in the holes will mark the holes for the top piece. This worked for me.

I use those hinges and have found the best alignment is obtained by drilling the hinge holes in the box back or side, assembling the box and cutting it open on the tablesaw giving perfectly matched holes. This works on the style of box I use these hinges on because the entry holes left by the drill are concealed.

I'm astonished! I get barbed hinges for 25 cents each at Meisel...do you get a better price on barrel hinges? Please let me know where, please and thank-you.

I guess I'm astonished that you can get barbed hinges for 2 bits a pop! I haven't looked too far for other barbed hinge prices. I just saw them in the Woodcraft catalog for $2 a pair. Yeeowch! I got 10 5mm barrel hinges for $6 at Woodcraft. I should look into this Meisel place. Thanks for sourcing it for me.

Sorry, Jeffrey, i should have given the URL: http://www.meiselwoodhobby.com/
Order a catalog from Meisel bec the website is hopeless--it's actually impossible to order the hinges from there. Oddly, they don't sell the slitting saw and arbor, which i bought from Rockler, but kee-ripes, they want a lot of money for one now! I checked Woodcraft, who are a bit cheaper. I got mine years ago, the good news being it is easily resharpened with a triangular file so it should be the last one you have to buy.
