I would like to try using barrel hinges on a couple of small boxes I am making. Could you tell me the proper installation method? I am having trouble visualizing how to allow for clearance so the box lid will open.

Barrel Hinges are relatively easy to install. They only require that you drill a hole in the box and the lid for each barrel. I guess your question really has to do with where to place the holes.
This Web site has a nice visual of how they install (see images below).

It's been a while since I've used these, and I wasn't able to reach our resident box maker today (I should hear back next week), but here's my suggestion for aligning the holes:
Open the hinge and use dividers to measure the distance between the centerpoint of the two barrels. Then check that against a rule to get the distance. Divide that measurement in two, that will be the distance from each edge where you will drill the holes. If you want clearance between the box and the lid, account for that when you locate the centerpoints of each hole.
I'll follow up when I hear more.

Thank you for the help. After I read you answer they worked quite well for me.
