I’ve built a couple of Barrister book case and have used the plastic hinges supplied by Rockler but I’ve found that they’re hard to install so that they operate easily. I just notice the Rocker catalog has dropped the plastic and cabinet hinges and inserted new slide mechanisms for the book cases so I ordered a set of them. I’m a bit worried because they sell a 15″ and a 9″ version, suggesting the nine inch ones for the Barrister plans they sell. I ordered the 9″ ones on their suggestion but my shelves are a bit over 14″ as per their plans. I’ll post a note when I’ve installed them.

Why not get accuride (or similar make) flipper door hinges, so the doors smoothly retract into the cases? That's what I did a bizillion years ago when I made my bookcases (which were my second major semi-pro project).
I'll keep an eye out for your report. I've been using pins in the carcass and a groove in the door sides. That works fine for the small ones I've made, but I don't know how suitable it would be for larger sizes.
