My first thought was for you to pattern it after the golf-ball display cases of which there are plenty. But that involves several rows of balls, and a dozen doesn't lend itself to that.
I've made a few jersey displays, one basketball-shoe display, and daydreamed about a few other designs. For baseballs, I'd consider making a shadow-box type display in the shape of home plate. You can get 12 by putting one in the point, two in the next row up, and 3 in the final three rows.
