I just finished sawing about 700BF of basswood.
Does anyone have some ideas on good usage for basswood boards? All is clear, boards 4/4, 5/4, 8/4, most quarter sawn, no mineral streaks or knots.
I still have about 1500BF of basswood logs to saw. Had a storm and all were uprooted, what are good sizes for carvers? I did cut one 4x6x12′. Any suggestions for drying-handling the carving timbers so they are useable when dry? I have never carved but know there are carvers in our area.
Your help is always appreciated. George

George,
Basswood is great for carving and chip carving. I imagine that the carvers in your area would be more then happy to take some of this off your hands for you. I also know some people who use basswood for the seats of windsor chairs.
The size can range from 8/4 up to 24/4 and almost any length.
Good luck.
Cheers
Pat
Forgot to ask where you are at. If you are close enough I might be interested in taking some off your hands.

Thanks for the information Pat. I live in Northern WI., just south of Lake Superior on the Michigan border, town of Oma. The short growing season seems to make the growth rings tighter.
