A friend has asked me to build a frame to house her half bathroom mirror. The mirror is 30″x 36″. I am thinking about a simple quartersawn white oak frame about 5″ wide to coordinate with the many oak antiques in their home. I was thinking about a 3/4″ rabbet for the mirror to sit in around the inside of the frame, and maybe a 1/4″ plywood back. I’ve never built a mirror frame or picture frame, and don’t know the best way to adhere the mirror in the frame. The mirror does have a bevel edge. Any advice from experience would be most welcome. I can use biscuits, pocket screws or splines to join the miters. Thanks for the help. Tom

I just finished a framed mirror for the sister in law. Left 3/23 "floating area"on all four sides of the mirror. Did a stepped Rabbet around the mirror. Mirror rabbet was 1/2" wide. Backing rabbet for luan ply was another 1/2". Used planed 5/4 red oak. Corners were mitered and splined across the miter so they showed.

Thanks. I like the idea of a stepped rabbet for the backing. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
Just another though about framed mirrors. I paint the slots or shoulder which hold the mirror black. That way the slot/shoulder won't be seen in the reflection of the mirror.
Excellent tip. Thank you. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
