   4" of 1/4" trim? You could make a scratch stock and make your own out of the wood of your choice. 4" is small enough you could just make it with a block plane or get real fancy and use a 1/4" bead plane or a Stanley #45 combination plane. If it's just a simple bead, I probably could have made it for you in about the same time it took to write this. Do you know any of your local wood workers?

   Nope, don't know any woodworkers.  To be clear on what I'm calling beading (because that's what I was told it is) it looks like a number of almost-oval-shaped wood beads cut in half (flat on the bottom, rounded on the top), connected together at their ends.  What you're describing as beading sure doesn't sound like the same stuff.  Since I haven't been here in a very long time and the format has completely changed, I don't know how to post a pic of it, but I can send a scan if it'll help.  It's always the small stuff.............

   Adrianne,

   Lee Grindinger, who often posts here, had an article in Fine Woodworking about a year or so ago on making a similar molding. I'm no expert carver but these are relatively simple. Make a bead molding then use a gouge (maybe a #8 sweep or so) that matches the bead. Maybe someone else knows which issue. I'd hunt it down but I should have been out the door about five minutes ago.

   Thanks for taking the time to reply, Larry.  Unfortunately, you're dealing with less than a novice here - more of a do-it-yourselfer.  My only concept of making this is to make an impression in a mold of clay or something and pour hot glue or some such thing in , then pop it out and trim to size.  NO concept as to how to actually make this from wood, which would involve carving tools as far as I'm concerned.

   The whole table will be painted once I get this section replaced.  The table's round, 22" in diameter, and only this one section is missing.

   Just to throw it out there, if anyone would care to make this for me, I'll pay whatever you'd charge.  I've been looking everywhere for this stuff, or a way to make it myself, for about 3 weeks now - internet sites too - and can't find anything.  You can certainly email me if interested.

   Adrianne, take a clay impression of the good piece then make a Plaster of Paris casting of the impression. Use paints to imitate the woodgrain and your done. Plaster of Paris was used extensively in the 1800's for things like dental and acorn moldings. If nothing else, take the casting to a wood shop with a CNC router system and have them make a replica of the casting.

   Back in the real world... If it's going to be painted, I agree that plaster may be your best bet.

   Adrianne, if you want to post a scan, here's how:  Make your scan and edit it so it's a reasonable file size (say, <30Kb).  Save it to your computer, then go to Knots and click on Reply (to any of the notes in this thread).  After you've typed your message, go toward the bottom of the Composition window and click on "Attach Files" and follow the instructions there.

   I have a couple of restoration catalogs I can look in if you provide a scan for reference.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl   ;-)

   Well, I have a scan to post, but I don't seem to have the  "attach files" option to get it in here.  Only thing that appears at the bottom is post, preview, spell check and cancel.  And below that, "here  is the message you are replying to."  I could be considered a guest, I don't know - could that be why I don't have that option?  Doesn't make sense, but who knows?

   I've attached scans a number of times in other forums, so I know how to do it.  Now what?  And thanks, forestgirl, for your  help with this.  Adrianne

   Sounds to me like you are signing in as a guest. Just go create an account and you should be able to do attachments.. Well, I think thats the way it works. LOLJohn

   Well, that's apparently not it either.  I just read the registration wording and it says ifyou register as a guest, you can't post or reply to messages.  So apparently I'm a registered member because I can do those things.

   HEY!  I just inadvertently scrolled to the bottom of this and there's the "attach files" option!!  No clue why it didn't appear before.  Stupid computers.......  I'll try it now..........

   Well, everything went ok until I pressed Done, then that window went away and this one was back, and when I started typing here the "attach files" window opened again.  No clue what's going on, and I don't see any indication in this message box that my file got attached, even tho' it says it is.

   How about if I send a volunteer the scan and they can post it here?  I could be here all nite!

   AAACK!  I went to another site, came back, and there it was!  Or rather THEY were, since I tried it twice and got no indication anything happened, until AFTER I posted, then left and came back.  Really weird way to post pics here..........

   So anyway, there's the beading.  Hope the pic is big enough.  Thanks to John and Uncle Dunc for the plaster suggestion. (I knew wording it the way I did about "paying whatever" was baiting, but couldn't figure out how else to word it at the time!!)  Wouldn't plaster easily chip, as opposed to wood?  And how would I attach it - with glue?  It's so porous....

   As for taking it to a wood shop - trying to find one, and then hoping they'd even DO it could be a feat.  For such small stuff, I've found most people don't want to bother (take the time), which is why I offered to pay the billion dollars for this!!! :-)

   Adrianne, here's a quick but important tip:  Any time you're replying or posting a new thread (or editing for that matter), it will take  a few seconds or more for your post to show up.  If you assume 30 seconds you should be safe.  I think the stuff gets indexed in the data base before it shows up.

   You can call them with questions -- they've helped me in the past and have been very courteous.  PS:  They have a couple sizes, but if they aren't the ones you need, there may be another restoration company that would have the right one.

    Glad we could help Adrianne.  For "everyone" click on the drop-down arrow in the "To:" box, and select All.  Is there any chance that you clicked somewhere on "Basic View" and lost the advanced features?  I think most people have found that not to work very well.  Have no idea, though, if this affects the "To:" box.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl   ;-)

   If there is a Lowe's home center near where you live, its worth a look.  They carry, much to my surprise, a large variety of small molding profiles that are sold in short lengths.  Just be sure to take your sample along with you and ask an employee- somtimes those things are hid pretty well.
