I will be starting work on a blanket chest soon, and I am considering getting the BeadLock system for the job. On the legs, the peice is juist over 5″ wide and the mortise will be on face.
Any thoughts on this?

the peice is juist over 5" wide ?? Or did you mean feet?
I understand. I was never good at Math! Is this a first project?
If so, do NOT get any special tool UNLESS you are sure you cannot do without it..
I think maybe for the wife.. She will understand a few messed up jobs.. Hell, she married you!
Just funnin you a bit. But your mate may love OR hate your woodworking shop.. She is just as she is.. Just different as she should be!
I would say what attracted you to her or maybe the other way around!

Thank you for the reply. This is NOT my first project. After some more research, I would have to modify the jig so much that it would not be reliable.
