Are these bearing kits (along with the allen wrenches and stops) something that really would be useful? I didn’t realize until just this afternoon that one intended use is to make your own top-mounting bearing-guided bits. Are they just as good as the ones I’d buy “pre-made”?

Yup. Or, to put it another way, after your pre-made top-mount is dull, you can buy a standard bit and transfer the bearing. Same thing.
Hi FG... MLCS (mlcswoodworking.com) has a kit of replacement ball bearing guides. It has 15 bearings, 4 stop collars, 4 hex keys and 12 screws, all for the cheap price of $29.95. They also list 14 different ball bearing guides that they stock. Hope this helps.
Oh yes, I keep forgetting to thank you for posting the website of the Mount St. Hellens web-cam. Some days it has the most beautiful views. Now I understand why people like 'that end' of the world. Reminds me of some of the Alaska wilderness.

Thanks Steve, yep, my brain engaged about an hour ago, and I actually thought of looking in the MLCS catalog. Woodcraft has a set, but it's like $50 or somethin'. I figure I wouldn't use them often enough to justify that kind of expense.
Ahhhh, the Great Northwest. Yes, I moan and complain during a rainy, cold winter (fall and spring) but one day of glorious blue skies and snowy mountains and sparkling Sound waters gets me over it!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Dear F. G.,
Bearing guides are mainly intended for rabet adjustments.
For top-bearing bits, might as well buy one as such. At least it would be matched, else it might result in cutting the guide, or the templates.
Unless there were quite unusual appliacations, of course.

Oh, I think I'll just go for it! The bit I'd buy will cost me $18. I can get a bearing set for $29 and have different combinations available when the need (or mood) strikes, just stick 'em on the right straight bit.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
