Hi all, my first post…
I am in the amateur bucket, refinishing a chair. I am used to refinishing and oiling teak and walnut, but now need to move into the shellac, stain, poly, lacquer world.
The chair I am working on came from an auction, with a heavily altered finish and failed joints. I have taken it apart, scraped, sanded, and am ready to refinish. However, I am not sure what kind of wood it is made of (and am therefore contemplating shellac before stain). From research on-line, the chair was produced in both oak and beech, possibly birch, back in the 50s and 60s, in Sweden.
Are there specific grain patterns that can help distinguish between beech and oak? I have attached a pic of the sanded raw wood, as well as two that have been wetted with mineral spirits. Any ideas are welcomed, thanks!

I believe the wood is Beech.
Definitely beech.
Yup.
Beech, for sure.
This is great, thanks so much!
Based on the assumption that this is European beech, I am thinking of doing GF oil-based pre-stain conditioner, followed by GF gel stain.
