Has anyone in here had any experience with the Beecham Skewchigouge? I bought one at Woodcraft and I am wondering if it was a smart move. I have tried it out and while it does a good job cutting coves I have yet to see how this tool is usefull when truned on its side like the instructions show.

I do not turn very often so I should keep quiet.. BUT...
I think a skew gouge is used with the face upward for forming details. Rotate the tool to 90° and the chisel edge makes a sharp shoulder.
When I bought the tool there was an instruction sheet with it stating just what you said to do....however I found the actual practice of usuing the tool, rotated to 90 degrees, didnt seem to work very well at all and grabbed the work. I sharpened the tool and tried again and it still grabbed. I tried taking small, lighter cuts.... still no good. I am far from an expert turner but I have been doing my own chair legs for some time and so I figured that while I am not a great turner, I am not bad and I just cant get this right. There must be some technique that I havent grasped yet. It makes a nice cove cut but at $40 I figure thats a lot to pay to just make the spool turning on a chair leg.Wicked Decent Woodworks

cherryjohn,
I noticed on the video it grabed on Scott Phillips too..he changed directions to accomodate the grain. As too your first question, the answer is yes, it's smart ot shop at Woodcraft...no taxes, knowledgeable people (many times)and it's not too far from you...I can't figure why you'd think that was stupid???....lol
Scott Phillips huh..................I gues he does fair to midlin' work so Ill accept the position of a suitable comparison. Now I didnt say I was stupid to shop at Woodcraft. What I said was I was questioning the wisdom of the purchase of the tool.
Tell you what though.I saw that Rikon 18" band saw down there for the paltry sum of $999. Sitting right next to it was a 14" Powermatic bandsaw for about $1400 I think ( old age and sawdust clouds a guys mind). Id go with the Rikon.fine looking tool.Wicked Decent Woodworks

Cherryjohn,
Have you watched the Phillips video and downloaded the PDF from the Woodcraft web site...just search on skewchigouge.
I've been eyeing the Rikon too down here, very nice...and the floor mounted radial drill press is quite reasonable too.
Id go with the Rikon.fine looking tool...
Thanks... I like mine more than ALOT..
I think it is way better than what flack I get in here for gettin' it...
Like anything... Could be better BUT.. I have limited funds.. Would be nice if it had a foot brake though.. Think I'll invent one for it...
Again.. I'm far from a expert... Did you rotate the tool when finishing the cut from cove to shoulder (while still cutting)?.. Could be just a nasty stick ya got there!
Like anything.. Once ya got it... ya thinks'... Gee.. that was not so hard!
Ya know Will, I have had skew chisels catch on me from time to time but they were never as dramatic as the catching that I seem to have seen with this tool. I am a bit shy of this tool right now. However I am never one who gives up easily so I will master this bad boy and probably make a lot of kindling doing it.Wicked Decent Woodworks

I hear ya! I love my routers but some of them bits STILL SCARE ME!
I use my lathe very little.. SO I do not have the experience to know 'what is good' so chatter or the like just makes me think 'It's ME!'
EDIT:: I forgot.. When I have trouble and I move that tool post REALLY close to the stick...
