Begginer – Re-finishing tops of rubber wood that currently are wenge finished
Gday
i have some furniture that is made of rubber wood. The finish the shop calls it is Wenge, im not sure if its a real wenge or a faux wenge, looking at the wood underneath that is unfinished it looks to be a real wenge but then i am a complete beginner when it comes to wood working. The tops are very scratched and i want to refinish just the tops.
All and any help is very appreciated. Attatched are photos of what i want to refinish.
Will it need staining or just oil and laqure if so what to get?

The pictures show a table with a finish very unlike real wenge--the maker is just using "wenge" to mean dark brown. Which does make your task a bit easier, but you are still not likely to find materials in your local shops to refinish the tops to match the rest. The original finish was basically a sprayed lacquer that included pigment--it is virtually a paint but probably applied in a number of thin coats. You might be able to find a suitable color in aerosol form manufactured by a company such as Mohawk. You will almost certainly need to find this on-line from one of the few sellers that will sell a few cans at a time. Another possibility is to use a pigment only gel stain, but that will be a challenge to apply evenly and to achieve a dark enough color.
Parawood, or rubber wood, is not an easy wood to finish since it is prone to blotching and doesn't accept stain type materials easily.
I wanted to see your table as I have one similar that I was told was told was rubberwood. I don't see any attachments or pictures though.
