2 questions.
I’m a newbie at HVLP and I’m looking for a waterbased finish for cabinets that looks like oil wipe on. I’m also hoping I can find something that I can buy from a local retailer or wholesaler so I don’t have to order it through the mail if possible. Anything good from Sherwin Williams?
Second question. I’ve got a big compressor that should handle HVLP, and I will want a gun that’s easy to clean up, has anyone tried the Porter Cable gravity feed? I figure parts will be easy to find. Am I on the wrong track?
Sorry if these are available on prior posts, but I’m not comfortable with this site yet.
Thanks,
Bill C. Smith

Hi Bill,
Welcome to the forum. I bought the PC HVLP gravity feed gun for a project last summer. I loved it but I'm judging it against nothing so take it for what it's worth! I was able to spray water based aniline dye followed by the same dye dissolved in thinned lacquer for final coverage coats. I then sprayed water based polyurethane for a top coat. (Neither brand recommended spraying as they said it would leave specks in the finish. I didn't find it to be any more so than brushing it on. I just rubbed it out with 0000 steel wool.)
The PC gun is easy to use, easy to adjust and easy to clean. I have the 30 gallon PC upright 5HP compressor and it has enough #### to power it although it does cycle on and off quite a bit.
Good luck,
Kell
Hi Bill,
I've been using the PC gravity feed sprayer for about 8 months now after years of siphon fed sprayers and have been very happy with results. One advantage I've noticed is that less thinning is needed for the gravity feed system as opposed to the siphon fed guns, at least that's my impression. It's great for spraying stains and is fairly easy to clean up. I bought the one with the pressure adjustment on the handle for a few bucks more. The added convenience is worth it.
Good Luck,
Kevin
Thanks for the info, both of you. Are you using any water based finishes? Has anyone sprayed any latex paints. What needles and tips should I get?
Thanks again for any info you can pass along.
Bill
I use water base finish exclusively now. I love them. You can spray w/b right over a oil base wipe on stain. You need to let it dry and spray a coat of de waxed shellac (you can tint it if you wish for added color) and then spray your water base finish over it. Check out Jeff Jewitts book great wood finishes. He discusses this in it. He does it in such a way that even I can understand it. For a HVLP I had a cambell Hausfeld turbine driven (HD sells it as Heavy Duty now) and it did a good job. In fact their discontinueing them and selling them for 150 bucks. I paid 300 for mine. But If you want a decent conversion gun (One using compressed air) I would look at some of the ones at Jeff Jewitts site at http://www.homesteadfinishing.com or like the accusspray I bought at http://www.compliantspraysystems.com. Jeff has a very good finishing forum BTW. Hope this helps

Thanks Ron, I forgot all about Jeff's site. Hadn't had a reason to visit it in a year or so. Your shellac "primer" sounds like a good idea. What do you like best as a top coat? Have you used some waterborne finishes that you wouldn't use again?
Thanks again,
Bill
Bill ,
I use waterbase exclusively now. Both stain and finish . But for the shellac you can also tint it .and use a water base finish BUT be sure it its a DE-WAXED shellac to be compatable. I havent tried that but some people love it. If its the golden tone of a oil base finish you can get waterbase finish that has a tint to give the look of a oil base . But Like I recommended get Jeffs book he covers that issue pretty well.
As for waterbase finishes I wouldnt use again I dont really care for the flecto varathane anymore . I use the enduro cause I can buy the stain/sanding sealer/finish at the same place and cuz there from the same manufacturer I like that assurance. Plus compliant is a distributor for enduro and theyre here locally so any probs I can get into my truck drive there and gripe in person to them (I like that better than phone griping) But my use of enduro more of a personal preferance then a quality issue.

Bill,
Looked at the PC gravity-feed and didn't like it. Went for an Asturo 9010 with a 2-qt pressure pot. This unit will work at substantially lower compressor output than other conversion guns. You can get the set-up from Jeff Jewitt at Homestead Finishing. The fit and finish are much superior to anything except a high end Binks. The pressure pot makes adjusting the material delivery more accurate for spraying inside of cabs and furniture.
I've been spraying a lot of acrylic for kitchen cabs. The Sherwin Williams Pro-Classic 100% Acrylic and the Pro-Classic primer work well. Thin the acrylic with 15% water and the primer 10%.
If you decide to get this unit, get a 1.2mm tip for thin finishes, and a 2.2mm for heavier bodied stuff.
Asturo makes tips from 1.0mm to 2.5mm, so you have a lot of choice.
Homestead has a good operation, and I'd buy from them again.
Hi All,
I also a beginner too, I use the cheap HVLP one from Grizzy to practicing of spraying. The finish surface has an Orange peel look, I set the pressure about 20PSI and I use the tip .1 which comes with the gun. I hold the gun about 6inches away. So what is my problem? BTW, I spray Deft lacqure. Thank you . vn
