I’m going to be in Beijing, China, for more than a month starting next week and would love to connect with anything woodworking there. In the past I’ve had a great time linking up with woodworking communities in Ukraine, Georgia, Japan, Mexico and more, but not China. I’ll be visiting multiple times over the next year or so. Any woodworking guilds, galleries, makers, stores or museums, etc I might find interesting and you’d like to recommend? This will be my longest time ever away from my shop, so besides the fun of networking, I’m looking for consolation and therapy! Thanks.

One thing you could do is go around to antique shops and examine various pieces of furniture for inspiration. Look for interesting joinery. I know that a great deal of antique furniture has been bought up and removed from the country by Westerners who got there in the 1970s and 80s. But there should be some around still. When I lived there in the 1980s, there were a number of antique shops clustered in a neighborhood just south of Tiananmen Square. Don't know if that is still true. You might also find some interesting furniture in museums there or even public buildings. In some cities, shops of a similar nature are grouped along one street. So you'll have jewelry makers on one street, woodworkers on another, rugs on another. Good luck.
Thank you! Yeah, I’ve been enjoying antique stores but not been able to connect with current makers.
