I used a 6" x 48" belt/10" disc combo sander for years. Bought a 6"x 80" edge sander 2 years ago and haven't used the belt/disc since. As far as I am concerned there isn't any debate. The edge sander does everything the other one did and does it better and faster.
As far as brand goes you will get many different recommendations. Buy the best you can comfortably afford, but remember that price is not synonymous with quality. I bought the Grizzly because I think it is a good value for the money, and I am well satisfied with it. A friend bought the 6"x 89" Jet and he is also happy with his purchase.
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY JACK, YOU PRETTY WELL CONFIRM MY THOUGHTS ON BUYING A EDGE SANDER INSTEAD OF A BELT/DISC. APPRECIATE YOUR TIME, DAN
I ditto what Jack said. After purchasing the edge sander, sold my 6x48 belt/disc sander with no regrets.
Hi Dannyboy,
Depending on the work you plan to do, you might consider the Ridgid EB4424 Oscillating Edge Belt/Sander http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/EB4424-Sander/
I do a lot of gluing up panels of three or four boards. It is a big help in getting the edges smooth, straight, and perpendicular to the faces.
Good luck on your projects!
THANKS JOHN, I'M LOOKINK FOR A LARGER SANDER. I HAVE READ SOME GOOD THINGS ABOUT RIDGID TOOLS. DAN
