Hello:
I finally fried the motor on my old, cheap table top belt/disc sander. So, now its time to buy another. I want to step up to a better, more durable machine. I don’t want to drop $800.00+ on a Jet/Delta/Fisch. I looked in the Grizzly catalog, and they have two machines for $399 and $429. The difference is due to the motor speed. The cheaper one is 3450 rpm and the more expensive one is 1750 rpm.
My question, does it really make a difference? Why would I not want to save $30.00?
Thanks
Michael

The slower speed will work much better (at least for the belt). It will have less tendency to burn the wood and will be much harder to stall for the same horsepower.
When I bought an older used craftsman, I replaced the motor and drive pulley to reduce the speed by about a factor of 3 and it stopped stalling and I had to push hard to burn wood.
Thanks for the reply. Kind of what I thought, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
Take a look at Grizzly's 6 x 80" edge sander. I just bought one to replace my old 6 x 48 belt, 9" disc.
It's easly twice the machine and costs about the same.
The proof is in the puddin'
