I’m using cloth backed ‘open’ coat belts on my drums sander and they clog quickly when sanding cocobolo or any of the other exotic waxy woods. Is there a different type than might not clog so easily? The gunk that clogs the belts cannot be removed with a gum ‘eraser’ or what ever they’re called.

can you get drums made with stearated paper? Or will that ruin your day when finishing comes?

What is 'stearated' paper?? And, what do you mean by 'get a drum made of stearated paper'? My drum is made of MDF and the cloth backed paper is wound around the drum.

Stearated paper refers to the papers that have that white, powdery coating over the abrasive. Often used in finishing, where the topcoat films have a tendency to ball up on the paper; the soap (stearate) helps to keep the soft finish from adhering as easily to the paper.
I haven't seen the coating except on paper-backed abrasives that would be too flimsy for a drum sander, but don't take my word for it. I would be interested in hearing what Klingspor says.
'stearated' paper, in addition to what Splintie said, is also refered to as self-lubricating paper - as opposed to the wet/dry paper, the black one, in which you add the lubrication.

Guess you already got the answer on stearates. I thought you had a drum that you slipped a sleeve over. Can't help more than that. Sorry. " The State, in choosing men to serve it, takes no notice of their opinions. If they be willing faithfully to serve it, that satisfies." - Oliver Cromwell
OH! Well, I do have a drum, but its 6" diameter x 14" long. I wind the belts onto it.

Planewood,
Klingspor make a paper for woods with high resin content. I use it on a drum sander to sand anything from pine to Cocobolo or rosewood. It works quite well. I can't tell you exactly what its called but contact them I'm sure they can help you out.
I went to their web site and couldn't find anything. So, left them a note.

While cocobola is a hard wood it is also an oily wood. The oil traps any dust that is created in the sanding process on the belt surface. The best I could recommend would be our CS311, open coat, aluminum oxide material. It still probably won't alleviate all of the loading but should help. It is also washable if you should choose to do so. If you are using a paper backed product, try our PS23. (We don't recommend paper for drum sanding coarser than 80 grit.) I hope this helps. Have a great day!

Have to live with it, I guess :(
