I’m building a bench based on some 20-year old Woodcraft measured drawings. What’s the best way to space Benchdog holes along the front apron near the Tail Vise? I’ve heard some folks moan about their choice.
I’m clear on doubles holes near the face vise.

I don't think the specific spacing is all that important EXCEPT that the spacing must be less than the amount of travel of the vise jaw.

Gary, you can note the distance of travel of your vise, then make certain the spacing on dogs is considerably less. IMO, the more bench dog holes, the better. As your working on pieces of a project, you'll have a lot less winding and unwinding to do if your dog options are close together.
Mine are space like this and I've found them convenient and never moaned yet:
Space dog holes as close as practical on the bench. Space them differently on the vise if you're making a European style tail vise like on Franz Claus's bench design. Different spacing allows you to take advantage of the full length of the vise body and make it easier to hold items of different lengths.
