I would like some advice on purching a bench sander. Grizzley has a 1/3hp 4×36 for $119+ shipping. The next size up appears to be a 1hp 6×48 for $399+ shipping. This seems like a big jump in the price is the extra hp worth the money or is their a better value somewhere else? Any help is appreciated.

Difference in price is due not only to the different motor sizes, but also the overall quality of machines. The 1/3 hp. is fine for the hobbiest, while the 1 hp. is designed for professional use. Don't own one, but a friend has the 1 hp - a heck of a machine.

Does it (your friend's Grizzly) have the disk as well as the belt like the 6x48/12" Delta?

Dennis,
He's got the G1183, 12" disc. I'd opt for the G1276; for only $40 more you get a 1725 rpm motor.

Grizzly also sells a 6 x 48" belt with a 9" disc for $199.99 (model # g1014z). I've got one, It's noisy, but works good.
Want to buy it? Hundred bucks and it's yours.
I'm going to buy their 6" x 80" edge sander to replace it. It costs $395 but I think it will be worth the extra money.

If you're on the other side of the continent (or ocean) and shipping costs a hundred bux, thanks - I'll buy a new one (grin)
Where ya located? Sounds interesting since this is an ancillary piece of equipment. Not a necessity but would be a nice additional piece of shop furniture.

About an hour north of Santa Barbara on the coast.
I am in the process of updating my equiptment. Also have for sale:
Delta 14" bandsaw 3 years old, lots acc, $600
Delta/ millwaukee 6" jointer $250
All good stuff. Kinda hate to sell the jointer, but I just dont have room for two.The proof is in the puddin'
Bo,
I've had Grizzly's 6 X 48 for several years now and am very satisfied with it. Not sure if it's the same one you looking at; mine is belt only (no disc) and the belt runs horizontally (platen faces the operator, not facing upward). Only small problem I had with it was when I ordered replacement belts from another company (not Grizzly). They were just barely too small to fit. I had to take out the adjuster rods and grind off about 1/8" from the ends. This one machine you need a dust collector for, cause it does put out some dust. GP
I have an old Rockwell/Delta 6x48 w/o a disc that I wouldn't mind parting with if you're in SoCal. I don't use it all that much so I'd like to free up some space for something else. It's on a home made steel stand, nothing fancy.
BTW: If more of us took the 2 minutes to fill out our profiles, there would be a lot less of these where are you posts.

I know right where you are. Do you work at Vanderberg or are you a full time ww'r. I was born in Santa Barbara and lived there until I was 12 and moved south. I know the area pretty well, but don't get up there as often these days. I just have an Aunt and Uncle left in SB. I've been going to Jalama since Refugio, El Cap & Gaviota went Ticketmaster 20 years ago, maybe longer. 30 years ago I used to surf the Ranch with permission because my Grandpa was good buddies with old man Holister.
I'm a little (actually a lot) ticked-off because somebody let out the secret about Jalama. I went last August with my daughter to camp out. It was a Friday and as per usual in recent years the sign said full, but that's never been a problem before. So I dragged the tent trailer the 30 very slow miles in and got to the gate. He said we're full. I asked how full and he said there's 45 on the list. My jaw must have hit the window sill. He said it was running 2-3 days and you had to be there at 3:00 for roll call to keep your spot. Seesh! So much for well kept secrets. I'm sure you locals blame those of us from down south for the crowding, but I swear I never told anybody about Jalama just so I could camp at the beach without having to make reservations 6 months out.
Anyway, I may camp there for Thanksgiving if things work out (Yeah I know it's cold and windy, done it a few times before). Send me an email and I'll check back with you then, unless of course you're going to be in the Huntington Beach area before then.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

The other big secert is Jalama is BEST in the winter.
The wind dies down and it never really gets cold there anyway. Lots less peeps too.
Just thinkin' about the place is makin' me hungry for their 'world famous' Jalama burger. The proof is in the puddin'
