I’m fixing to make a new bench. I have a good bit of 8/4 maple that I plan to rip into roughly 3 inch widths and and glue together on edge – pretty standard. I’m still toying with the design including the width of the top, and may need more wood if I decide to go wider. This brings me to my question: I have an 8/4 walnut board that I picked up cheap a while back owing to some significant sap wood (lighter) on portions. Could I use this for a couple of strips in amongst the maple, or am I asking for trouble mixing these species in this way? Anyone with experience with something like this out there? Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's quite common, and will work fine. I did it in my bench, also.
