I have had two bench top planers in the past 10 years. The first was a Jet and the second was the Delta 22-580. After using for various projects, in both cases the motor overheated and ruined the armature as well as the brushes. I’m not sure what cause this as I followed all of the manufacturer’s removal thicknesses, maintenance, etc. I have several hundred board feet of white oak to plane. I am planning to replace the 22-580 with a free standing planer probably a 15″. First any idea why the two burned up and secondly which 15″ would you recommend. I like both the Jet and the Grizzly blade style in both.

i have a rigid 13" that i ran about 2500 ft through before it conked out
repair shop got it running again but said i was overworking it
since then i got a free standing 15" CRAFTEX 2 speed unit (made in Tiwan ) & have put about about 1500 ft through it all hardwood with no problems .
I had a used makita that lasted thru years of abuse, came time to repair it[now 10+ yrs. old]and it would cost almost as much as a new one. Then watched the tool reviews, and checked out and bought both Dewalts.I really wanted the Dewalt with the 4 posts and chain. It continually clogged the gear/chain/sprocket, even with dust containment attached.I returned it for the same model and ditto..same problems.
Then i returned that and got the less expensive dewalt also recommended.after less than a 100', maybe less than 50' it would no longer feed the boards thru. i checked the rollers for build up and they were clean, the blades were noticeably soft, denting on the first knot.So i ended up with a rigid, only cuz of the lifetime warranty. It is okay, but i don't like the side the dust port comes out on,it's counterintuitive.I run hardwoods 95% of the time.I said all that to say,It's not an easy straight forward process, finding a planer that does meet up to what i think are reasonable expectations..and i hope you end up with a winner! thanks rob
Thank you both for the information Looks like I'm off to purchase a Grizzly G0453.
