Hi gang. I’m starting in on my “dream bench” and just plunked down a pile of money on some gorgeous hard maple, including a bunch of 12/4 for the top slab. I was able to get dimensions that will allow me to have 4″ planks in the slab, which I like visually a lot more than something like 2″ planks. The lumber is well dried and should be stable – does anyone want to talk me into smaller planks glued up? Is there a stablity issue I’m not thinking about? Thanks.

Look at the end grain and it will tell you which direction(s) it will move as it expands and contracts. One reason for using smaller strips instead of wider ones is that when the grain is alternated, the movement basically cancels and it stays more flat and straight. If the boards are quarter sawn, it should be pretty stable. When they're rift sawn, they may move more but if you can maintain constant humidity, it shouldn't be a problem. Make sure you round over any edges and corners- sharp corners on a hard maple bench top can easily damage the wood used in your projects.
It will be fine, don't worry about it. But remember, once a year, check for flat and level it out with a #7 plane, (as good a reason as any to buy that new L-N #7!). It took my bench a couple years to settle down, but now it needs very little attention. Also, I put no finish on mine, I like the bare wood and quick pencil sketch's, glue drips, etc., scrape right off. Have fun, it will be the project you will enjoy the most.
