Hi parts , highland hardware has some nice vises, theres one made in india that look promising, if I had the number handy Id list it ,but check out there web site, and see whats there. mark.
Parts,
Assuming your going attach the vice to a workbench, Jorgensen and Record make high quality vices (not sure Record is still available) and Pony makes a less expensive one. Many on here like the Veritas vice and some are lucky to have a pattern makers vice...Garrett Wade carriew both as I am sure Highland hardware.
Hey Lars, get an old Emmert. They go for about $700, and are the best you can buy. I'm still saving up for mine, so I'm using a Wilton. Good vise, good value and nice features. I'm an Ebay junky, so I got it there. Probably can't go wrong with a brand name, Record, Jorgensen, Wilton ect.
Watch the ads and auctions; I found a pattern shop going out of business and picked up my Emmert for mcuh less. Got two more also, for friends. As to whether it was the right move, that is occassionally debable, but usually I love it.

Alan, if you come across another Emmert, I'd like to have one, please?? Not many pattern shops out here, or any shops for that matter. Still looking though.
I should clarify, there are a few different styles, and some are more valuable then others, so I should have listed a range for the price. $450 to $800 is probably more accurate.

I made my front vise from German hardware and have a Veritas twin screw end vise. If you are interested in the Record metal vise's with the Brit "tommy" bolt handles, Lee Valley has them. If you want a knock-off cheaper, you will find them at Highland Hardware (my second home here in Atlanta). ha.. ha...

I'd watch out for the Jorgensen. Although "Made in USA" fit and finish appear to be shoddy. Was just looking at one today and the faces are not parallel. Check the feedback on Amazon on these vises.
I've seen the India vises at Woodcraft. They are close to the Record's at a reasonable price. Record did make great vises; Lee Valley is pretty much the only place to get them now, and they only list one size. Also the manufacturer just shipped their tooling off to China so who knows where the quality will go...
The real question is what are you going to do with your vise? Different types of work are best done with different types of vises. A great starting place is The Workbench Book by Scott Landis (Taunton, of course). A fun read with great perspectives on all kinds of styles and hands- on about how it is to work on the different benches with all those different vises (check out the leg vise for example).
