I’m in the process of designing a workbench. In the past I worked on a bench improvised out of plywood without dedicated vises. As I have gradually migrated towards using handtools — now almost exclusively — it has become painfully obvious that I need a bench with vises to hold down boards for planing, sawing, and carving.
Here’s my question. What vises are best suited to a handtool worker? I realize that the answer depends on what I build (chairs vs large case pieces). My goal, however, is to build a good all-purpose bench that will be used to build all kinds of furniture with hand tools. Under that scenario, how would you outfit a bench?

Hy Houston,
I don't have any specific products to recommend but here are a few links to articles we've done on installing vises or building benches with unique vise systems. The first one is a good overview of your options:
Vises Are a Woodworker's Third Hand
Installing a Cast-Iron Vise
Pattermaker's Vises
You can also search through some workbench project articles on this page. A few of the bench plans show detailed installation of various vises.
Hope that helps,
