I am just getting my garage wood shop together with some tools I inherited (a table saw is the big one.) My dad suggested a jointer as my next major purchase. I wonder if anyone could opine on the pro or cons of a bench top vs. cabinet style 6” jointers. I like the prices of the bench tops, but I don’t want to purchase a piece of equipment that is not useful, even to a hobbyist like me. Thanks in advance.

Hi Zappa,
In general you'll find a stationary machine easier to work with.It depends on what you plan to make and the wood you plan to use.If you're making small items and buying your wood pre-dressed you could probably get away with a bench-top.But if you plan on any serious work or are buying rough lumber,it will just frustrate you.
The weight ,power and accuracy of a floor model can't be understated. As a matter of fact, alot of people who buy 6" models soon wish they had spent the extra and bought 8".I guess the bench tops have a place, but I've never needed one in my shop and most of my work would be difficult if not impossible with one.
Hope this helps,
Brent
Deja Vu. I was puzzling over this for a while but have decided to purchase a benchtop. Due to the fact that I won't be moving it around much I went with a Craftsman. It quite a bit heavier than the Delta and doesn't seem a flismy.
The first use was tonight and has give a nice cut. Thus far I am only trying short stalk.
Good luck
I fell into this trap when I first started... trap made all the worse by not having shop space for any floor standing model, so I bought a bench top... big mistake...
Not enough width.... not enough length (makes banana's outa long boards) and luggin it onto / offa the bench didn't do much for keeping the beds true...
These days I do stock prep by hand.. unlimited width... only length limit is the size of board I cah get onto the bench, and the finish puts any wood muncher to shame.. shop's a lot quieter too with less dust gettin everywhere..

Stay safe....Have fun
Good morning from north of the border. I also bought a six inch jointer, but my solution was to mount it on a dedicated stand. I mounted four casters to the bottom of the stand that can be locked in position. This way I can move it around my small basement shop. It works for me.
