Dear All,
I was wondering if anyone has a decent way of bending a poplar moulding, short of steaming. It is a panel mounding, approximately 3/4 x 1 1/4. I want to bend it along the 3/4″ dimension. It is going on a wall that has
nine foot radius. ( Half round room, eighteen feet in diameter) Kerfing out the back has not worked, so I think that I am steaming at this point, but would appreciate any suggestions.
Best,
John

Cut it into thinner slices. That is, you'd have say three 1/4" slices making up the 3/4" direction. Buy two lengths of the molding, cutting one slice from one length and two slices from the other length. This gets you around the issue of losing width to the kerf. With thinner slices, they'll bend around the radius.
I would go with the suggestion to cut it into thin slices (laminations)and then glue it back together. You will need two pieces for each section to make up for the kerf, as was mentioned, but I think it will work better in the end than steaming. There is an article in one of my Taunton books on trim carpentry showing how to make curved trim for large arched windows using this method. You might search the Fine Woodworking website and see if the article is available by itself.
