Hey guys,
I have the chance to purchase an old secretary for almost nothing. It is is pretty poor condition, but I dont mind a challange, it would be a beautiful piece if refinished properly.
My biggest problem is that one of the drawers is missing. The fronts are curved like the one in the picture I have attached. Is there a chance that I might find someone local to bend a piece to match the other drawers, or am I wasting my time ? Or possibly send it off to someone to match ? I am not sure what type of wood it is, but it appeared to be solid rather than veneered.
Thanks for any thoughts,

I'd think the hardest part will be to match the wood. If its solid, that will be a difficult piece to find. The rest is bandsawing and finishing. I don't believe originals were bent or laminated, but that may be a centennial reproduction, and I don't know how they would be done. Can you post a picture of the top and bottom edges of a surviving drawer ? I'm not exactly local to you, but I'm in MD.
I will be down there again next weekend. Will make certain to get a better look at the construction of the existing drawers. If it is indeed bandsawed and veneered, that would be easy :) Bill Koustenis

They may be veneered on both sides for stability .

Hi Bill ,
I think you need to take a closer look at the edges , my take is they may be veneered on the face over a band sawn stacked substrate or blank like many " Serpentine type drawer fronts "
A good chance they were not steamed but sawn and veneered.
hope this helps dusty
what Dusty said...wood is mahogany, easy to find...Jimmy
The fronts may be 'bricklayed". If the inside is not veneered it may be possible to confirm the construction there. Also the bottom of the drawer front may indicate if is laminated.
