Reading the current issue of “Preservation” I found a reference to Benite. I’ve never heard of it.
“After you have the right color of the new wood, you seal the pores with Benite for the finish.” dalyspaint.com
Has anyone heard of this stuff?

I've used Benite for decades
Frosty,
I've used Benite from Daley's as a stain controller mainly on soft woods for nearly forty years. It works good on fir, hemlock and alder to keep dark stains from turning the wood blotchy. I've never used it much on hardwoods.
You pre-coat the wood before staining. The trick is how long you let it soak in and how heavily you flood the wood. The moe Benite that has soaked into the wood, the lighter the stain will take. I would experiment on some scraps before going to the final workpiece.
Good luck, Bret

Thanks for the info. I definitely plan to use scraps for my test.
