Hi, guys,
I need to figure out the best glue to use in a toy box about 20″ high; obviously, I need to coat a lot of surface area in a short time. I need a long open time, but want a strong glue. The joints in question are a little deep, so there’s quite a bit of overhang, which I was planning to level with a flush trimming router bit (the box is made of Black Locust, and I’ve not had much luck with my handplanes, although scraping works quite nicely.) So, a second question–any problems you can foresee with trimming the joints flush that way? Also, I don’t want whatever glue I use to ruin the router bit if I can help it, so I’m hesitant to use epoxy.
What say you?

I am getting ready to do about the same thing, and plan on using ordinary carpenter's glue (Yellow PVA).
I keep a water spray bottle in the shop to raise grain for finishing, and to reduce tear-out when planing, etc. I might be tempted to mist the glue lightly if it was getting ahead of me, but I would be far more tempted to do a quick spread of the glue and let the assembly push it into the corners, rather than spending too long with a glue brush.
I would be concerned about the flush trimmer not leaving enough of the end-grain of the box joints to get the good sanded finish that makes the end-grain pretty. If they are too proud to sand flush, can you cut a portion off with the table saw before assembly, leaving just enough to sand?

Titebond makes a slower drying glue called Extend Wood Glue. Has the Titebond name on it also.

Agree with Alan about the Titebond Extend. I use it on work-benches when glueing sections of long stock. It will give you about 10 to 12 minutes of open time. I have everything layed out and dry runned in advance. If you need more open time than that, you might have to seek another as the old carpenters glue as mentioned. Just allow plenty of dry time if you use it.

Thanks, folks. I had to drive to Denver, but I got myself a bottle of Extend yesterday. We'll see...
