Best adhesive for attaching wool felt to wood
I am a novice woodworker making small boxes for my granddaughters. I have a question about adhering felt to wood (may have been asked and answered before).
I would like to use a product and technique that prevents bleed-through. The felt I will use is about 1/16″ thick.
Thanks in advance for advice.

Hey,
I can think of 2 options; a thin coat of spray glue, Elmer's pva (white) glue. I've used both. The spray affords a nice even coat of glue. You can spread the Elmer's with a brush, it'll wash off with water. Neither will bleed.

Mikaol's suggestions are both good. Another option is to use flocking adhesive. You can match the color of the glue with the felt. It shouldn't bleed through but if it does, you won't be able to tell.
Your question was recently asked and answered here in the recent past. Try doing a subject search using the search box above and you will get lots of opinions and suggestions.
Thanks for helpful advice.
Thank you Bilyo for your comment. I read this forum most days and suspected that this kind of basic question had already been asked and answered. I did use the search function for the combinations of “adhesive” “felt” “wood” and “box” without success. One post from 1996 did advise making a flour paste. Most items returned in most searches were only incidentally related to the search terms. Kind of like Google searches after the first page or two.
My better question might have been how to use the search function more effectively.

Yeh. Sometimes it just doesn't work the way you expect/want.
I have lined several jewelry boxes with velvet fabric and on first try I felt like a one armed paper hanger. I finally figured out that wrapping the fabric around pre-cut pieces of thin cardboard and then gluing those into the box worked best. I usually start with the bottom and then do the sides. I use spray contact cement for this as it doesn't bleed through the fabric. Felt can be a bit stiffer. So, maybe the cardboard is not necessary. I think you can also get felt with a peel and stick backing. Also, note that you can also get a felt like material that is treated to help prevent tarnishing of the jewelry. You can find it at fabric stores.
Super 77 spray adhesive from 3M.
MJ. That's good stuff. It's great for upholstery work. However, for my jewelry boxes, I've not found that anything that heavy duty was needed. I usually use the lighter duty spray contact cement from a hobby/craft store.
Nothing suffers from "stronger" glue. The can has got to be 10 or 15 years old. Buy the best and spray it when you need it.
Yup - no one ever wished for a weaker glue.
You are correct. However, my point was for the OP or anyone else asking, that the heavy duty glue is not necessary for this type of work. But, if that is what you've got, it works fine.
Super 77 worked great for my black velvet drawer liners
You could get the self-adhesive felt. Comes in sheets and in rolls. That's what I've been using for a long-time. Hobby Lobby and other craft stores have sheets. Rockler and others sell it in rolls.
