best bench top Mortiser? Gererals site?
I’m looking to buy a bench top mortiser, under $300. Which one is the highest quality, most veristle in this price range? Should I be looking at only 1750rpm machines? or is a 3450rpm machine just as good?
I’m also looking for the web address for General. Thanks Joe

I prefer Shop Fox at $235. 3DOG3 will tell you General at $300, an others will tell you Delta, Jet, etc. I love the SF and the General. The General has better clamping which I duplicated with a little witch-craft. General runs at 1750 RPM and SF at 3450. I would prefer the 1750, but I got a floor model at $185 so I could not refuse the offer. You have to be more careful with the 3450 RPM or you'll burn the chisel and wood. On the other hand, it is more aggressive in hard-wood.
All mortisers require some tweaking. All but SF and General have too short of handles. All get the job done. What kind of deal can you get local. That will be a factor. Good Luck.. Others should respond with more info concerning their mortiser.

Any questions, ask. I'm hitting the rack as late EST. ha..ha..

I've used (borrowed) the Delta and the PM12 by Multico. I broke the Delta's rack gear using a cheater on the handle to punch a sh*tload of mortises in QS white oak. The Multico, while out of your $300 price range, really handles truely-hard hardwood much better. But for the price difference, the next big job in QSWO is gonna start with the purchase of a Powermatic floor model for sure.
PS: I trust you're still keeping an eye peeled for a '65 A- body tilt-wheel turn signal switch for me :).

Yep.. And it is as hard as you said to find it. Most of the 65 electrical is extinct. You may have to modify or convert. As soon as you did a donor car will appear b-4 your eyes. Ha..ha.. Story of my life..

Thanks for your feed back. I've never had the chance to actually use any of the bench top mortisers, but I am planing on buying one. Right now after a little bit of research I'm leaning towards the General,75-050M1.
I don't have a local dealer, but have found it on the web for $300. delivered.

My pleasure. I think that is a good decision. I was going to get it as I really prefer the 1750 RPM ( or 1725-I forgot exactly ). The GI has a good front hold-down. All the BT's could be improved in that area, but that seems to be true with just about all tools period. They need to let WW's design them. Ha...
The price is excellent at $300. My local has it for $290 but I pay state sales tax and have to drive 45 miles to pick it up. With shipping included, actually that is great as there won't be sales tax unless the web source is in your state.
Going Mon to look at the GI jointer. Will have a scond look at the mortiser. Please give me feed-back on your thoughts of the GI after you get and use it. Need any tips on hold-down, fence or table upgrades post. You'll probaly get some help.
Good luck and have a great week-end. BTW, what web-site as I have never seen the GI tools sold on one. Would like to look to see if they have the jointer.

I finally opened my e-mail. I had already answered your post b-4 I realized you had. Hope I pretty much summed up your questions. Yes, I would buy the SF again. I would also buy the General. Both are very heavy duty if you are not using for production as you mentioned.
For production, John hit bulls-eye with the PM floor model as I would love that sliding table and tilt. I cannot warrant that one, though..
Good luck and happy shopping..
