What is the best clear primer to use on wood before applying oil based paint/wash? I typically use zinsser BIN shellac for all my projects because it works great under the paint I use (satin impervo oil based paint) but for my current project I need to apply a transparent wash over the bare wood so the BIN is no good as it dries opaque white.
I was considering this product but I’ve never used it before:
Does anyone have experience with this? Thank you, any help is much appreciated! 🙂

Its hard to go wrong with Zinsser Sealcoat
Water based shellac seems like a good idea, I'd be concerned a bit about raising the grain. I trust Zinsser, but I'd test this if I didn't want to sand my whole project again.
+1 on good 'ol sealcoat.
Agree
Sealcoat is really THE best. I just wipe it on for most smaller projects where I don't need a bright base coat. Sometimes though I tint Bin with Transtint dyes too. I had a conversation with a 50 yr pro painter about using Sealcoat or Bin (and he uses Bin for all trim)...he said really the only reason Bin is white is so you can see where you "put it".
I’ve tinted BIN before, do you think sealcoat itself could be tinted?
You can tint sealcoat with transtint dye.
Thank you for all the help! I’ll try to get some Zinsser Sealcoat to use on my sample.
Water base shellac is good one to go and as my friend told me that one coat of Prelude Clear Wood Primer fills the pores of the wood and provides a surface that enables you to obtain a more uniform finish color over the entire home. Prelude is ideal for both interior and exterior wood surfaces.
