Best Cordless Sander for Dust collection
Hi all,
I’ve set up shop restoring furniture in my unfinished basement, so it’s really important for me to limit dust from tools. I have two Festool CT SYS Dust Exractors to connect to my tools.
Not crazy about the price of the Festool Cordless Orbital Sheet Sander RTSC 400 Set for $659 (unless it’s REALLY the best way to go). Is there another option that is cheaper, or a better value for the price?
I’m looking to purchase a cordless sheet sander with the following:
– Great dust collection connected to the Festool CT SYS dust extractor
– Great performance
– Low vibration while operating
– Cordless operation
Any suggestions or advice greatly appreciated.

Every other option is cheaper. The Bosch OS50VC would get the job done for less or if the budget is tight the Makita BO4900V
I am thinking of going with the Makita XOB01Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 5" Random Orbit Sander (Tool Only) for $119 on Amazon. I already have two 5.0Ah batteries that came with my Makita track saw that I can use with it.
Can I ask, why does it need to be cordless? You're hooking it up to a corded vac, after all.
At the moment I have only one electrical outlet in the basement. Trying to go cordless as much as possible.
Well, the Festool dust extractors have a built in outlet for the sander, so turning the sander on starts the vacuum. Only one outlet is needed, for the vac.
Great point. Didn't notice that when unboxing them.
If you're going to be sanding alot, and the fest-vacs make it look like you are, ditch the batteries. Even if you have to run an extension cord the consistant performance will keep you happy. Scratch patterns change as batteries weaken.
Another very good point I hadn't considered.
I have the hose with the cord in a jacket over the hose.
Very convenient.
I have a Fein sander (Fein MSF636 I think) that I use with my Festool Vacuum.
Pretty happy overall.
But alas, it is corded but I'd not trade it for a cordless IMHO
May I ask why the sheet sander rather than a ROS?
Is there an advantage for furniture restoration?
I have both a Dewalt corded ROS and Ryobi cordless ROS. I found I dislike the cordless due it being unbalanced. The battery hangs off one side making it necessary to constantly correct for the uneven weight distribution. I've no experience with other brands, don't know if one of them has avoided this problem. Rarely use the cordless.
Another chime in for going corded if you are going to hook up a vac in a shop environment. The cordless cost and limitations (fewer every cordless generation) are not necessary if you are connected via a hose anyway IMHO.
A power upgrade is probably in your future if you continue on this path so I would bear that in mind as well. MY ROS of choice is Bosch but, my units are so old (1295's) they do not help here. Check the swirl pattern results in magazine reviews. That is the primary deciding factor as it relates directly to your result in use.
Agreed. I worry about swirl marks. I use the sanders for the rough work. Depending on the project, the final sanding will be by hand with the grain. I actually enjoy sanding a beautiful piece of wood by hand. It's relaxing to me.
