Hey guys, I’m finishing up a table I’m building for some friends of our and now about to stain and finish it! The top is solid birch and the bottom is solid maple, what would be the best clear coat for this that will last a long time. The table I build for ourselves 4 years ago I put 3-4 coats of a semi gloss poly not fast drying. After eating at it 2 meals a day for the last 4 years the poly is gone where we rest our arms on the table and don’t want this to happen to them! Thank you I’m advance for any recommendations!! Attached a couple picture just because 😁

I have used Waterlox with great success over two coats of shellac as a sealer. You will need to wipe on many coats to get a good lasting finish 7 or 8. The time spent is worth it. Waterlox has a little tint to it which I like. Good luck.
If it were mine, I would put two coats of Zinsser Sealcoat, and then two or three coats of General Finishes High Performance poly.
Thanks for some ideas, never thought of using 2 different kinds of finishes!
I would also use zinser seal coat if I wished a light amber tone but if I wanted to keep the birch and maple original color I would use 4 coats of general finishes high performance over a coat of their sanding sealer. Since you will use stain, it may not matter much.
