I have some fumed and lacquered oak shelves that look great. However, I want to replace their mounting system with ledgers I’m having made. The cost to have lacquer applied is more than I can spend and I’m inexperienced applying it and don’t have a good space where I live to do it.
The least expensive option is to have the ledgers made and fumed, and for me to apply a finish that will look close to the existing lacquered shelves that will be mounted on top. I don’t think oil-based poly or urethane will look right. I’m leaning toward a paste wax. I appreciate any recommendations for finishes and brands.

If by lacquer finish you mean a thick looking gloss finish, you could use clear epoxy. If you can afford some amber 6 coats of spar varnish would give that deep gloss finish also.
Lacquer is glass clear and shiny. I'd have to guess the clo sets you could come is water based poly. Probably semi gloss.
Thanks for responding. The lacquer is a very natural finish with zero gloss. It looks close to natural wood grain but with a protective coating that is smooth to the touch.
I agree. Water based poly is probably your best solution. You can get it in gloss, semi-gloss, satin, or mat. Dealers will often display samples of each. Or, sometimes, depending on brand, you can buy it in small cans so you can experiment with it. It can be applied by brush or spray.
