I have successfully coated teak with varnish, lacquer and shellac. With the first two, I wipe first with either lacquer thinner or acetone to remove some of the surface oil that naturally occurs in teak.
*Paul: I agree with Howard's post. My son build a desk from teak and we finished it with oil stain & poly varnish. We wiped the teak with lacquer thinner before we stained & very lightly before the first coat of vanish. Has been almost two years and no sign of any failure.Ron.
