I’ve read about mixing boiled linseed oil, varnishes and thinners. I need help with a good mixture that I can wipe on these beasts that I’ve made and installed upstairs. Largest project I’ve ever attempted so I need a finish that’s easy yet forgiving and something that won’t yellow as I like the look of unfinished maple. Can anyone give me advice? One of my weaknesses is finishing and I’m starting to learn the importance of this. Can’t spray because I needed to install these 4’x8′ monsters upstairs before final assembly.

Most oil finishes will amber the wood. Try unadulterated tung oil from the Garrett Wade catalog. It has no driers added so plan at least 24 hour drying time for EACH coat. Behlen is the manufacturer, I believe.
Linseed oil will always darken over time. You could consider a brushing lacquer; it most likely will not impart an amber tone to the wood. Whatever you do, finish a scrap piece first from start to finish so you can see exactly what will happen.
*In the December, '98 issue of FW there is a review of water-based finishes. Recommended is the Oxford Hybrid Gloss Varnish by Target Enterprises (which, by the way, I can't find anywhere. Several other suggestions are given. I'm anxious to see any other suggestions to your question as I just finished a built in maple desk and am looking for a good finish as well. Can anyone else recommend the Oxford Varnish and give suggestions on where to find it? Or are all the other products (like Deft or Varathene) just as good.
*Thanks for the above responses. I have decided to go ahead and try letting the maple yellow somewhat and tried the mixture of boiled linseed oil, mineral spirits and polyurethane mixed in equal parts. Found something like this in some of the postings here. Haven't put it on the finished project but did try on a left over piece of maple and I think I will like it. Smells like danish oil and checked this morning and it seems to have a nice looking finish. Will try to take a digital picture of it and post.
*I have some questions about the healt efects of mineral spirits conteined on dielectric products. Somebody knows something about?
