Can anyone recommend a good way to simulate dark cherry on poplar and birch plywood? I can’t seem to find any good cherry stains.
I have access to a HVLP if necessary.
Thanks in advance.

Pick up Jeff Jewitts book on Finishing. Or head over to Homesteadfinishing.com its both a store and a forum. Youll need some dyes, stains and possibly some toners to get what youre after, and life will be easier with that HVLP.
Cajun Dan ,
The Birch veneer is no problem , but Alder would lend itself much better for the solid stock. Alder when stained properly can look very much like Cherry .Not sure how large of a project you are planning , but if it is small maybe you should consider using genuine Cherry wood. The time saved on finish and the end result may warrant the extra expense.
good luck dusty
Thanks. Alder is hard to get in the Houston area, so I had to settle for birch and poplar.
I built a pair of brochure racks for our church info center. To keep costs down, I built the bases out of unfinished birch kitchen cabinets. The brochure racks sit on top of the cabinets.
Working for the church has been a learning experience. The committee has a tough time understanding:
Why they take so long to build. (I am a hobbiest who works full time.)
Why they cost so much. ( They are only paying for materials.)
and; why I am considering changing churches.
C'est la vie,
Dan
