Best paint grade wood for kitchen cabinets
I was going to build the face frames, doors, and drawers for my kitchen cabinets from pine and finish with a milk paint. What I am wondering is of pine is going to be too soft (so that it sustains dents easily) especially with a bunch of kids running around. Is there a better wood that can sustain abuse but also accept a milk paint pretty well?

Poplar or Soft maple
With kids go with soft maple. Just do a fingernail press into the 3 species mentioned and the marks will say it all.
What those guys said.
Some mills will carry planed 7/8inch cabinet grade kiln dried maple for cabinets. It works really well and not very expensive. I made my spray painted kitchen cabinets with it and am very happy with the outcome.
I used hard maple and it was cheaper than soft maple.
I would go with poplar

No. Unless you want to go with Lignum vitae or something...................
Our original kitchen was made of fir. I can't remember kidmarks being an issue, and our 3 boys were pretty rough.
Maple is going to serve you well. It is harder than poplar and takes paint well.
