Hi All,
I’ve just been hired to build an office desk/file cabinet system. I’ve got the plans laid out, but I have a question about the slides for the file cabinet.
The client wants the file cabinet to have the file cabinet’s drawers be full extension. I’m thinking I should use slides rated for 100 pounds, just to be sure. I’ve looked at various slides and cannot figure out which is best. Here are some I have compared so far:
GlideRight sells full-extension 20″ zinc-plated slides for $60/carton. A a carton contains 15 pairs (model #2070ZC). So these are $4/pair????. http://store.gliderite.com/itemdetails.cfm/ID/29.
Rockler sells full-extension 20″ Accuride slides (model #32839) for $28.49/pair.
Lee Valley sells full-extension 20″ zinc-plated slides (model #02K30.20) for $11.30/pair.
Can anyone comment on these, or name other slides that you have experience with?
Thanks!

I have been very happy with the slides I have purchased from http://www.cshardware.com/
Good price and good quality.
I use Accuride Slides. On a project that I did about 5 years ago, the customer told her 5 year old boy was playing on the drawers, using them as a set of stairs to reach the cookie jar. Ingenious, but the 100 pound slides held up and work just as well today as they did when they were installed. They are a wonderful product.Regards,

Matthew,
I would use the Accuride, but would not pay the price from Rockler...Try
cabinetparts.com or
woodworker.com
Their prices are very good, and they will ship fast in most cases.
Good luck w/ your project

Also consider a system so you can only open one drawer at a time or the cabinet is going to fall over. Hafele and a few others sell such things and a guy in FWW awhile back figured out a cable idea that does the same thing and is very low tech and cheap. It was in the Methods of Work column. He won a plane or something for the idea.
Hi Matthew, I always use Accuride slides in office furniture.I think that sweet running, accurate drawers make customers happy.A surprising number seem to judge quality by that standard, rather like dovetailed drawerfronts. The only failure I have had was when an adult parked his rear on a drawer 5 years`after installation.I replaced the slide for free and a monthlater picked up an order for $6000 of desks
I've used KV brand self closing full roller bearing slides in all of our kitchen cabinets. They are a well made product. The local Lowe's carried this brand in the non-self-closing version. I liked the quality enough that I found an online distributor that carried their full line of slides and bought the self closing version. Pricing is about the same as the accuglide brand. KV is made in USA, I don't know where accuglide is made. I had been looking on ebay then, and found that there are lots of generic Chinese knock-offs sold by the case for about 1/4 the cost of the KV or accuglide. They generics probably aren't too bad, but I didn't want to risk it myself.
I recommend the KV 8505 full extension 150# rating for file slides. I think KV is a little smoother than other brands, IMO. Haven't had any problems/callbacks with KV.
Imports/knockoffs are hit or miss. OK for shop cab's, ??? for good paying clients.
Thanks everyone for your input. Sounds like there are several good options here, and it's nice to hear from those who have had success with one or another.
craig,
Are these the same as what Sandalboy mentioned in his post? Do you buy them at Lowe's, or do you have another source? Thanks.
I too use Accuride, which are available for about half of Rockler's price from the wholesale hardware distributor in my area. I prefer the Accuride line with a separate mounting rail for the drawer, and the ones I use have polymer bearings as opposed to steel -- which are quieter. I can't remember the model number, but I can easily get it if this would be useful to you. Also, Accuride makes slides with "overtravel" -- which are nice if you have an overhanging desktop. They bring the drawer out about an 1 1/2" beyond the back of the drawer.
im going to assume the file cabinet is a standard deep cabinet. but if its a horizontal drawer cabinet (files come out sideways) then you need to worry more about the stiffness of glides. when in doubt make it bomb proof.
oh yeah, i use accuride

i just made some giant shoe drawers for a customer. bomb proof. a few extra bucks makes a nicer. i choose stronger ones then im never in doubt.Tmaxxx

cheers, ill buy
tmaxxx,
I agree about making them "bomb proof." My client told me that she would never need the cabinet to hold more than 50 lbs. But I figure for an extra $10 I can install slides that are rated for 100 lbs. or more, and they might be a little quieter. The client will be happier, and I'll be more confident that there will be no problems! Also, she has a five-year-old boy. This way, if he climbs on the drawers, they'll hold his weight.
yeah i know. an hour after i put in thise shoe drawers, we found out it was a fun place for there 2 yr old to slide in and out of. all i was getting at is if the drawers are wide, 100lb glides might not be stiff enough for the drawer no mater how little the weight.Tmaxxx

tmaxxx,
What the heck. I'll go for the 125 lb parts!
I buy them thru trade suppliers, my local Ace hdw carries them as well.
